Details & Itinerary

Schedule
  • The tour through the Three Sisters is a day long adventure.
  • When leaving from Wilmington, it is an hour drive to get to the “put in.” We leave town by 7:30 am, get to the boat ramp at about 8:30 am, run a shuttle to drop a vehicle at the “take out” point which takes about 30 minutes, and then we are in the water at about 10:00 am.
  • There is an educational presentation before we push off, covering the research and conservation that’s been done in the region, how it is done, and the future of conservation efforts in the area.
  • It is about a 2 hour meandering paddle down to the center of the old trees. We usually have lunch when we arrive at the center of the ancient forest.
  • The we spend another 2 hours exploring the area – walking around or paddling, depending on the water levels.
  • Finally we take a serene paddle to the take out point, and duck in and out of several old growth areas along the way. We normally get to the take out point at about 4 pm.
What You Should Bring
  • You should wear closed toed shoes if possible, a hat, sunglasses, and sun screen lotion.
  • Bring a WATER BOTTLE, and your lunch and snacks.
  • No need to bring very much gear, but cameras and/or binoculars are encouraged.
  • No GPS – It is requested that everyone turn off their GPS on their devices before the start of the trip. In order to protect the old growth trees, we are discouraged from posting coordinates.
Your Responsibilities

One must be physically fit to make this challenging paddle. It is not a beginners trip, as it requires physical stamina and coordination to navigate these waters. If you have reservations about your abilities, you can have a strong partner ride with you in a tandem kayak or canoe. If needed, Captain Robbins can paddle one extra person in a tandem kayak.

Payment and Cost
  • Price is $125 per person, with a four person minimum per trip (tours with less than four people incur an additional cost). Exceptions are made for certain individuals. i.e.- active service men or women and their immediate family.
  • For large groups (9 or more), there is a $25 discount per person.
  • Payment is accepted in cash or bank check (financial institution checks are not accepted). Payment is due at the end of the trip. Deposits are not required, but this is with the understanding that if a trip is booked, the participants will have the courtesy to show up, or give sufficient notice of cancellation.
  • 10% Discount for Cape Fear River Watch Members
Age Restrictions

There are no specific age restrictions for young children, as long as they can be accompanied by their parent in a tandem kayak or canoe. However, it is discouraged to bring young children along on very hot days, as this will create a less than pleasant experience for the kids. Please let Captain Robbins know during booking about any special needs or accomodations needed for your trip.

Seasons

The Three Sisters is a breathtaking and serene experience year round. Captain Robbins’ favorite times in this area are in the Spring and Fall. In May, the warblers are nesting. There are many other birds too, but these little guys are special. We also have Swallow Tailed Kites, Anhinga, Wood Storks, Great Blue Heron, and others nesting in the Springtime. Fall is a magical time of year to experience the ancient forests. November in particular is a beautiful month to experience the Ancient Bald Cypress, as this is the time of year when our leaves change colors. Once the leaves fall, the depth of view is spectacular. However, any time of year, you are guaranteed to fall in love with these waterways and their majestic forests.
